University of Texas hack may lead to 6,000 personal identities stolen
Published December 14th, 2006 in HackersFirst UCLA, now this. Honestly, it’s kind of surprising that we aren’t seeing more university hacks being publicized. In fact, as some of you may know, university and college networks are among some of the most insecure that you can find. It kind of makes you think if there are more university hacks occurring that the universities are trying to keep it under wraps such as not to hurt their reputation.
Hackers might have obtained the personal information of 6,000 people who worked for, applied to or attended the University of Texas at Dallas, school officials said Wednesday.
The information includes names and Social Security numbers, the school said. In some cases, addresses, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers also might have been obtained.
There is no indication that the information has been distributed or used, school officials said.[more]
