If you are unfamiliar with this whole incident, it was pretty depressing to hear about. With all of the flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, lots of people started to set up their own Katrina funds to help pay for the damages. Some of these funds were legitimate, others weren’t. Lawanda Johnson ran one of the funds that was illegitimate and now she is sentenced to six years in prison. That doesn’t bother me one bit.
known as Lawanda Johnson, was sentenced yesterday to more than six years in prison for defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of more than $267,000 and for aggravated identity theft following Hurricane Katrina, U.S. Attorney Deborah J. Rhodes of the Southern District of Alabama announced.
Williams was sentenced to 75 months in prison, and was ordered to pay full restitution to FEMA in the amount of $267,377. In addition, Williams was ordered to forfeit all of the property she purchased with the proceeds of her fraud, including four automobiles, real estate, televisions and other electronics.[more]
