While the topic of ransomware is nothing new, it seems to be growing in popularity among cyber criminals. The idea is simple: remotely encrypt all of a user’s files so that they can not use them. Then, use that user’s files as a bargaining chip to get whatever it is you want. Unfortunately, the worst thing is that anyone who uses a computer can be a target, since everyone pretty much stores stuff on their computers. In short, to protect yourself from this, you should never be infected in the first place. Use things such as antivirus and antispyware with constantly updated definitions, don’t go to sketchy sites, and remember to always make backups.

If you store anything on your computer like pictures, word documents, music, e-mails and even financial data you’re the perfect target for the newest computer crime.

The crime involves something called ransomware. Ron Teixeira with the National Cyber Security Alliance explains. “Ransomware is a piece of malicious software that actually gets into a consumer’s computer and encrypts and locks all their files.”

All the files are locked until you agree to pay a ransom. Like other scams, hackers can infiltrate your system through a phishy e-mail or attachment. But most often, this scheme hits when you click on an innocent looking but infected website.

Once you do, Teixeira explains. “Your files just all seem to disappear. A couple of new files pop up and then you see a message, just a text file that says instructions how to get your files back. That’s the actual ransom note.”[more]
