Yup, it’s one of the newest scams making its way across email addresses. I would have to say though that this type of scam will probably get some of the biggest reactions, especially when it comes to the extremely paranoid. The scam has to do with receiving an email from a ‘private investigator’ with an MP3 attachment of a supposedly recorded phone call you have…. it isn’t. In fact, it is a secret executable file that displays a security warning stating your system is at risk. It then recommends you purchase a certain type of security software… which is also fake. I wonder if this scam artist actually makes money off of this…
The Dorf Trojan wants you to think so Emails from a private investigator lead to malware infection
Wakefield, MA - infoZine - IT security and control firm Sophos is warning of a new Trojan horse that tries to scare recipients into believing that their telephone conversations are being recorded, in a ruse to ultimately scare people into buying bogus security software for their computer.
The Troj/Dorf-AH Trojan horse has been spammed out attached to an email claiming that the sender is private detective listening to your phone calls. The “detective” claims that he will reveal who has paid for the surveillance at a later date, but for the mean time the recipient should listen to a recording of a recent phone call (which is attached to the email as a password-protected RAR-archived MP3 file).[more]
